Story
Creative directors, Chris and Clare Turner, founded CTO Lighting almost 20 years ago. They launched their first collection on the guiding principles of designing lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. This collection of modern lighting symbolised elegance and excellence in British design manufacturing, the benchmark for all future collections. Chris, an engineer by training, worked at Arup where he gained all his great technical expertise to design and manufacture the lighting with such meticulous detail. Clare’s creative background, working in fashion for a leading UK brand, has added valuable retail knowledge and experience to the company. With this combined expertise and passion for design Chris and Clare were able to use their knowledge to launch a collection at Top Drawer in 1997. This very modern and fresh collection was quickly picked up by leading design conscious UK retailers such as Habitat, The Conran Shop and Heal’s. Realising there was a demand for more premium lighting they began to focus on more luxurious materials in their fixtures; hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-crafted stone. This refinement in the use of these materials has enabled CTO Lighting to be recognised as a modern luxury lighting company. Since this move in direction CTO started working with leading industry figures including, amongst many others, David Collins Studio, Philippe Starck and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio on prestigious interiors worldwide. Alongside this, CTO Lighting has been commissioned to work on bespoke lighting fixtures for The Savoy Hotel, The Dorchester London, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse. Under the creative direction of Chris and Clare Turner, CTO Lighting has also worked with respected and award-winning designers to bring depth to their collection; Autoban, Michael Verheyden, Stéphane Parmentier and most recently French Canadian designers Larose Guyon. In 2016 CTO Lighting opened its first standalone showroom in London providing a space to showcase its luxurious fixtures. The CTO Lighting collection is now distributed globally to some of the foremost design led retailers and working directly with leading international interior designers and architects.
