The number one concern in all manufacturing industries is corrosion. Every manufacturer strives to produce the best product, but it will not matter if the product suffers from serious corrosion damage when used. This article will address some of the ways that can be done to prevent corrosion in plumbing materials. Corrosion in plumbing is caused by moisture and oxygen coming into contact with a substance that is made up of two or more elements. When this happens, there are chemical reactions between the different materials resulting in corrosion damage to the material. External Rust is kind of corrosion can result from water that is contaminated with various other chemicals including carbon dioxide, salt and sulfates. These contaminants will accelerate the corrosion process. We recommends the following for preventing corrosion in plumbing materials: metals, especially in the case of steel pipes and copper fittings. Apply plumbing sealant to all threaded joints, pipe threads, etc. to prevent water from entering the system. This can be done while installing new parts or repairing older parts, Use plastic house wrap between soil and slab foundations if metal flashing is not installed. Use a 2" trap with overflow when installing shower, tub or sink faucets to help prevent galvanic reactions from occurring. Install compression fittings on copper and copper alloys to minimize galvanic action between dissimilar metals. Use plastic drain traps on all domestic and sanitary drains to minimize corrosion in the trap and discharge line. Install back flow preventers to help protect water supplies from contamination. Make sure that any exposed pipe threads are sealed, as these will leak fluid at a much faster rate than walled off pipe sections with thread sealant applied. Whenever a metallic pipe is leaking, it will be necessary to replace it with a non-cemented PVC replacement material.
